Starting a new year often brings fresh goals and opportunities to make a positive impact. For professionals and advocates in the field of rehabilitation, the Missouri Rehabilitation Association (MRA) and its four local chapters offer a unique platform to connect, grow, and contribute meaningfully. This post highlights five distinctive features of MRA that make it a valuable organization to join and support in the coming year.

Membership Benefits Extend Beyond Missouri
One of the most appealing aspects of joining the Missouri Rehabilitation Association is that membership is automatically included when you join the National Rehabilitation Association (NRA). This means that by becoming a member of the NRA, you gain access not only to MRA but also to its four local chapters spread across Missouri. This structure offers members a broad network of professionals and resources at both the state and local levels.
This dual membership provides several advantages:
Access to statewide and local events, workshops, and training sessions
Opportunities to collaborate with peers in your immediate community and across Missouri
A stronger voice in advocacy efforts by uniting local and state professionals
For example, a rehabilitation counselor in St. Louis can benefit from local chapter meetings while also participating in statewide initiatives through MRA. This layered membership model strengthens professional ties and enhances resource sharing.
Active Role in Organizing Key Events
MRA is well-known for its commitment to fostering professional development and community among its members. Each year, the association organizes several important events that serve as cornerstones for learning, recognition, and networking.
Annual Conference

The MRA annual conference is a highlight for many members. It features workshops, keynote speakers, and panel discussions on the latest trends and best practices in rehabilitation. Attendees gain valuable insights and practical skills that they can apply in their work.
Award Banquets
Recognizing excellence is a key part of MRA’s mission. The association hosts award banquets to honor outstanding professionals, volunteers, and organizations that have made significant contributions to rehabilitation services in Missouri. These events celebrate achievements and inspire others to strive for excellence.

Networking Events
Beyond formal gatherings, MRA organizes informal networking opportunities throughout the year. These events help members build relationships, share ideas, and explore collaborations in a relaxed setting.
By participating in these events, members stay informed, motivated, and connected to a community that shares their passion for rehabilitation.
Fundraising, Scholarships, and Leadership Opportunities
MRA goes beyond professional development by actively supporting its members through fundraising and scholarships. These efforts help remove financial barriers and encourage continued education and leadership growth.
Fundraising Initiatives
The association regularly hosts fundraising campaigns and events to support its programs and services. These initiatives enable MRA to expand its reach and impact, benefiting both members and the individuals they serve.
Barbara Parker Scholarship Fund

The Barbara Parker Scholarship Fund is designed to assist people with disabilities who have experienced a one-time, unanticipated expense that impacts their ability to obtain or maintain employment. The fund can provide up to $300 to an individual who meets the eligibility criteria. The fund was created in 2011 and MRA Eastern chapter has awarded over $10,000 to individuals over the past 11 years.
Leadership Development
MRA encourages members to take on leadership roles within the organization. Serving on committees, leading local chapters, or organizing events helps members build skills that enhance their careers and influence in the field. Leadership opportunities also foster a sense of ownership and commitment to the association’s mission.
Commitment to Advocacy for Individuals with Disabilities
At its core, MRA is dedicated to advocating for the rights and employment opportunities of individuals with disabilities. The association works tirelessly to promote policies and practices that support inclusion and equal access in the workplace.
MRA’s Mission and Vision:
Mission: The Missouri Rehabilitation Association fosters inclusive environments promoting excellence in rehabilitation services by supporting professionals through career development and collaborative learning to empower and advocate for Missourians with disabilities to gain meaningful employment.
